Outlook Not Accepting Your Email Password? It Could Be the Special Characters

If you’ve tried setting up your email account in Microsoft Outlook and found it’s refusing to accept your password, even though you’re certain it’s correct, you’re not alone. We’ve seen this issue crop up from time to time, and it often boils down to one surprising culprit: special characters in your password.

Why Is This Happening?

Outlook, can be a little temperamental when it comes to passwords that include certain special characters, things like:

@"£$%^&*(){}[]+=#~

While these characters are generally accepted across most platforms (and are great for strengthening security), Outlook sometimes struggles to process them correctly during the setup process. Instead of a helpful message, you might just see repeated login failures or cryptic error messages that don’t really explain what’s gone wrong.

What Can You Do About It?

Fortunately, there’s a quick and easy fix and it doesn’t require any technical expertise. Here’s what we recommend:

1. Log in via Webmail

Use your existing email address and password to sign in. If you’re able to access your mailbox here, that confirms the password is correct — it’s just Outlook that’s having trouble with it.

2. Change Your Password

Once logged in, navigate to your account settings and choose the option to update or change your password.

When choosing a new password, we recommend the following:

  • Avoid using special characters like @"£$%^&*(){}[]+=#~
  • Instead, use a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters and numbers
  • Aim for a password that’s at least 12 characters long for security

A strong example might be something like: Summer2025Secure or VisionMail8593

3. Update Outlook with Your New Password

Now that your password’s been updated, try adding your account to Outlook again using the new login details. You should find that the setup completes successfully.

Still Having Trouble?

If you’re still encountering issues:

  • Double-check that you’ve entered the updated password correctly
  • Make sure Outlook is set up to use IMAP and the correct incoming and outgoing server details (we can provide these if needed)
  • Restart Outlook and try again

If problems persist, don’t worry, just drop us a message or give us a call. We’re more than happy to walk you through the setup process.
