Why I’m Taking on Swim22:

A Personal Challenge with a Deeper Meaning

Swim22 isn’t just another fitness challenge for me—it’s personal.

As many of you know, when we formed Vision ICT back in 2000, it was a joint effort. My father played a key role in shaping the company alongside Maggie White and myself. From day one, this business was built with teamwork, passion, and a shared vision. My father’s influence stretched far beyond the company—he was my role model, both professionally and personally.

Sadly, in September 2019, I lost my father. He had lived with diabetes since he was 16, and while he never let it define him, it was a constant part of his life. His birthday is on 13th June, and this year, I’m marking the occasion by taking on an 11-mile swim in his memory as part of the Swim22 challenge.

The irony? My father was a fully qualified sailing and windsurfing instructor. He spent years helping young people gain confidence on the water. Meanwhile, I never quite mastered swimming! These days, I can manage about 25 metres non-stop, but let’s just say I’ll be heavily relying on backstroke. Picture a very determined starfish, and you won’t be far off.

Swim22 is a fundraising challenge for Diabetes UK, where participants swim the equivalent of the English Channel (22 miles) over a set period. I’ve set my own goal of completing 11 miles by my father’s birthday—something that will push me both physically and mentally.

But this challenge is about more than just swimming. It’s about raising awareness and funds for Diabetes UK, supporting those living with the condition, and honouring my father’s memory in a way that feels meaningful.

I’d truly appreciate it if you’d like to support me through encouragement or donation. Every stroke I take is not just for me but for the millions of people affected by diabetes.

Thank you for being part of this with me.
